The Innovation of ReconciliACTION - a Call to Action
During last night's panel on 'The Innovation of ReconciliACTION', ideas were shared about the things we can do as personal action toward reconciliation. Captain Amber Boyd even made a list & we thought we would share it here for everyone to read.
1. Read a book by an Indigenous author
2. Purchase Indigenous made goods
3. Go see art from Indigenous artists
4. Take an Indigenous -centered course (ex. Ryerson, UofC, UofA, UBC, UofT have courses or certificates)
5. Learn which Indigenous Nations are in your community
6. Volunteer at an Indigenous event
7. Hang art on your walls from an Indigenous artist
8. Ensure you hear more than one point of view on decisions
9. Get a better understanding of the concept of worldviews
10. Hire an Indigenous professional
11. Train your staff on Indigenous issues
12. Ask questions (ex. "What is protocol? Why isn't there Indigenous representation on this committee?)
13. Go to a Pow Wow (confirm if open to all)
14. Visit your local Friendship Centre
15. Learn a land acknowledgement, explore your own land acknowledgement
16. Look up where residential schools were located
17. Watch a film by an Indigenous filmmaker
18. Go to the websites of Nations in your area
19. Read Indigenous poetry
20. Learn basic greetings in local Indigenous languages, use when engaging Indigenous community members
21. Push past fear and engage - ask Indigenous community members which Nation they are from?
We also discussed some wonderful Indigenous books and stores in the area such as Found & the Whyte Museum in Banff that have a good selection of Indigenous authors.
We would love it if you'd drop your Indigenous book suggestions in the comments below, or to please share about any Indigenous content creators others may find interesting.
NEXT WEEK: March 16th to 23rd is Indigenous Arts & Culture week in Cochrane and there will be plenty of events taking place. All the events have been shared on Indigenous Cochrane, UrbanCasual.ca - Cochrane, AB, as well as directly on the Wazin Ichinabi Ti - House of Oneness website: www.wazinti.ca
Let's all get to work on this journey!
Thank you to everyone who joined us last evening at Found.
